Susan Voisin: FatFree Vegan Kitchen

Susan Voisin loves creating delicious plant-based dishes with no added oil. Her journey began in 1988 as a vegetarian who did not want to eat or wear anything made of or by animals. By 1994, Susan had become 100% vegan and lost 100 pounds after she learned to cook plant based without added fat.  Susan does not cook with refined fats (oil, margarine, and shortening). This simply means that instead of sautéing in oil, she uses water or broth. In baking, she substitutes apple sauce, flax seeds, etc.  Visit FatFreeVegan.com for “Substitutes and Techniques for Fat Free Cooking.”

Susan lives in Jackson, Mississippi, with her husband and daughter, who test her recipes and offer helpful criticism.

For the past 18 years Susan has maintained the Fatfree Vegan website, a collection of over 1400 low-fat vegan recipes, sent in by hundreds of people. In addition, Susan has been blogging her own recipes since January of 2006. Blogging has led to many opportunities: Her recipes have been featured in books and magazines, not to mention that she is a photographer for three of Nava Atlas’s books: Vegan Holiday Kitchen, Wild About Greens, and Vegan Express.  Now, Susan’s FatFreeVegan website has become one of the MOST popular vegan food sites. When you visit the site, find her informative “News Bites”, the FatFreeVegan Newsletter and learn Susan’s latest updates on her projects and new recipes by her and new reader-submitted recipes.

Susan shared her enthusiasm for her plant-based lifestyle with the publication, “Veganacious” in April of 2010: “I am happy to be able to expose them to vegan food that is delicious and good for them.  One less animal eaten is one less animal suffering, whether that comes about from someone turning vegan or someone cutting back the amount of meat they eat….”

Despite the focus of a “vegan website”, Susan has attracted omnivores to her site where they can expose themselves to this yummy and healthful cuisine.  In an interview with the NYT in January of 2013, she gave a reality check to those worried about eating this way, “If I can be a vegan in these (South Carolina and Jackson, Mississippi) not quite vegan-centric places, you can do it anywhere”.  She also hopes to bring plant-based enthusiasts a new cookbook soon.

Susan Voisin’s Fat Free Vegan website and blog have created a formidable presence in the vegan world by providing over 1,400 low-fat vegan recipes (created by her and sent in by hundreds of people), offering support to those transitioning into a plant-based lifestyle, and relaying how it benefits health, creates compassion for animals and protects our environment.
