HEART TO HEART

I was born in Detroit and have lived in West Bloomfield since 1971. I am 57 years old. In May of 2013, I was diagnosed with Heart Disease. One artery was 100% blocked and two others were 65% blocked. I had leaky valves, an enlarged heart, hardening of the right side of my heart, a left bundled block, and heart murmur. My cardiologist gave me two options, bypass surgery or try “Plant-Based Nutrition” (PBN).  I met and spoke with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn who wrote the book How to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.  After our meeting I decided to try PBN. After just one month my heart pain went away (that took 3 weeks). My cholesterol levels have dropped from 309 to 122 in just one year. I have  lost 43 pounds and I feel great. Plant-based nutrition saved my life.

I would like to share all my experiences with anyone who is considering changing to PBN. Who should consider this type of nutritional change?

Not the view you want

Not the view you want

  • Anyone who has had bypass surgery, but doesn't want to have future bypass procedures
  • Anyone who is facing bypass surgery, but would consider changing their diet to PBN as an alternative to surgery (like me)
  • Anyone with a family history of Heart Disease who does not want to succumb to a preventable disease

I promised myself that when I felt better I would put together a support group to help others. I contacted all of the current Chiefs of Cardiology in our area. They suggested I contact Dr. Joel Kahn, who agreed to assist me on this journey.

In February of 2014, we held our first  PBN Support Group meeting. I  thought that 20-40 people would be a great showing. 123 people attended! 23 people signed up as volunteers. The meeting was held at Beaumont Hospital. On March 24th, we held our second meeting. I thought there would be a significant drop off of participants, but I was wrong! We again had over 110 people attending, 44 of whom were new. This means that we now had over 220 people in our support group and 40 volunteers. In both April and May we continued to grow and as of today we have 824 members and 42 volunteers. We also moved to Birmingham Groves High School (we needed a bigger auditorium), built a web page which has had over 110k views in just 16 months, partnered with 12 restaurants in the Metro Detroit area to create Plant-Based menus for our members, conducted nutritional tours in local supermarkets, created over 14 Small Groups to share the benefits of plant-based nutrition, nurtured a small group of 1st and 2nd year medical students at Wayne State University to promote PBN, worked with State Representatives to teach mothers in the community how to serve healthy lunches and snacks to their children, created a walking club that uses our West Bloomfield Trail System and much more...with much more to come.

The answer is easy - Eat plant-based, whole foods

Please help me help others. Join our group, make a positive life change and contribute to the well-being of others.  The group meets once a month. The volunteers meet once a month. If you would like more information our group, sign up to be a member to receive periodic activity emails.

Though no one can go backwards to make a brand-new start, anyone can change today to make a brand new ending.
